Summary: During this learning session, the core principles of Safety-specific transformational leadership (SSTFL) will be reviewed, and its specific application to safety in nursing. The four I’s of transformational leadership will be detailed: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration. Case studies and anecdotes will be shared to illustrate these concepts in action. The relationship between transformational leadership and safety outcomes in healthcare settings will also be explored through related outcomes data. Lastly, strategies to develop the evidence-based behavioral characteristics of leaders practicing SSTFL skills will be reviewed.

Objectives:

  1. Define and explain the core principles of safety-specific transformational leadership.
  2. Analyze the relationship between transformational leadership and safety outcomes in healthcare settings.
  3. Outline strategies for developing and implementing transformational leadership skills among nursing staff.
  4. Discuss metrics and tools that can be used to measure the impact of leadership on safety culture and outcomes.

Shelly Fischer, PhD, CNS, CNE, NEA-BC, FACHE is an esteemed healthcare leader and academic, currently serving as an Associate Professor and Specialty Director of the i-LEAD Nursing Leadership and Health Systems Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she mentors and guides nursing professionals to become effective leaders in their field. With a robust background in nursing and healthcare administration, Dr. Fischer has dedicated her career to advancing nursing leadership and improving patient safety.

Dr. Fischer’s research focuses on transformational leadership, patient safety, and nursing education. She has published extensively in prestigious journals, contributing valuable insights into the role of leadership in enhancing safety outcomes and fostering innovation in nursing. Dr. Fischer is recognized for her work in developing and promoting transformational leadership practices in nursing, which are crucial for improving safety and quality in healthcare settings.

Dr. Fischer received her MS and PhD in Nursing from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and her professional credentials include Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), Nurse Executive Advanced-Board Certified (NEA-BC), and Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE)
