AHRQ supports U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, a CDC-sponsored observance to raise awareness of antibiotic resistance and appropriate antibiotic use. The inappropriate use of antibiotics is the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance. Each year, about 2 million people become infected with drug resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 people die from these infections. AHRQ has proven tools and resources to help providers reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and combat antibiotic resistance.
AHRQ also has research funds available to discover new methods to combat antibiotic resistance and conduct antibiotic stewardship. Deadlines for applications begin on January 25, 2018 for demonstration projects and February 5, 2018 for research projects.
