Description: Anticipating and mitigating the unintended consequences of developing and using health information technology (IT) is the focus of a health IT safety program. During this program, the safe practice recommendations developed by the Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety, convened by ECRI, for embedding health IT safety into your organization will be reviewed. The tool kit, including implementation strategies and tools developed, will be shared for dissemination.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Identify health IT as a patient safety issue
  • Describe the strategies to develop, implement and integrate health IT into your patient safety program
  • Review the safe practice recommendations and tools for developing, implementing and integrating a health IT safety program
  • Share resources available to improve health IT safety in your organization

Session Facilitators: Robert C. Giannini, NHA, CPPS, CHTS – IM/CP, Patient Safety Analyst/Consultant

Mr. Giannini has earned a BS in Public Health from Temple University. He currently works as a patient safety analyst/consultant for ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Patient Safety Organization. Prior to joining ECRI, Rob has held roles as a Patient Safety Officer and Nursing Home Administrator at a variety of facilities. He is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) and Certified Healthcare Technology Specialist (CHTS) as an implementation manager and clinician/practitioner consultant. Rob has over 30 years’ experience in the areas of administration, patient safety, quality and risk management, performance improvement, health information technology, regulatory affairs and accreditation, medication safety and service line development.
